The University of the Third Age (U3A), is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly group environment.
Popularity
U3A groups can now be found in most towns and cities across the United Kingdom. A typical U3A group has about 250 members but could be as small as 12 or as large as 2000.
Location
All U3As are different as the skills and talents of their members define what they can offer so if you find more than one local group in your area you would be advised to contact all of them to see what is on offer.
Age
U3A is open for anyone who is retired or semi-retired and who would like to join with others in sharing knowledge, skills, experience and interests.
Ability
There is only one qualification nesassary to belonging to U3A, and that is the possession of a little time,and the enthusiasm for keeping alive, alert and have a mind open to fresh ideas.
Description
Local U3As are learning co-operatives which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The teachers learn and the learners teach. Between them U3As offer the chance to study over 300 different subjects in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking.
Potential
The U3A approach to learning is – learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained.
Cost
The cost of a University of the Third Age membership is minimal.
