Gomoku is traditionally a board game played by two, but can be played equally well using no more than a pencil and paper.
Players alternately place markers on a gridded board. The winner is the first player to make an unbroken row of five markers.
Popularity
The origins of Gomoku are attributed to China. However the name "Gomoku" is from the Japanese language, where it is referred to as Gomokunarabe, which lossely translated is Go meaning five, Moku is a counter word for pieces, Narabe lining things up.

Description
Played with distinguishingly marked stones (differing colours). Players alternate in placing a stone of their colour on an empty grid intersection. The winner is the first player to get an unbroken row of five stones horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, completed lines do not have to be straight.
