The full name of Scurry Driving is Double Harness Scurry Driving, which means two ponies pulling a carriage through pairs of cones at full gallop. Drivers compete against each other to get the fastest time possible at shows throughout Great Britain.

Popularity
Of all equestrian sports, scurry driving must surely rank as one of the most exciting. Imagine for yourself the spectacle of a pair of small ponies scuttling at breakneck speed around a twisting course roared on by an enthusiastic crowd.

Location
The sport is very popular in England and Wales, having many locally organised competitions. It is also a 'main ring attraction' at the major County shows held throughout the summer.

Age
Any age from around eight years upwards can enjoy scurry. This is an activity very suitable for mixed ages, of either sex. The Scurry Driving Association (SDA), govern the rules for the sport, to keep it fun and exiting for a watching audience.

Ability
Novices are required to wear a white armband, and it is recommended that novice drivers carry an 'approved experienced driver' as groom for their first few competitions. In order to compete, the driver and the owner must be Full Members of the SDA.

Description
The aim of the sport is to drive through a course of between 12 and 14 pairs of cones as fast as possible. On each cone is placed a ball. If the ball is dislodged, 5 seconds are added to the time. For second and subsequent balls dislodged ten seconds are added. The winner is the driver with the quickest overall time. There are two classes in scurry, 12hh and under, and over 12hh to 14.2hh. At shows, the top six in each class compete for the show championship.

Dedication
Welsh Mountains are the most popular breed used, for the under 12 hands class, and Welsh ponies or riding types being the most popular for the over 12 hands class. The cart is specially built, having a low centre of gravity, and built to withstand the rigours of high speed turns. It should have a front seat of either single or double width for the driver, and a similar one at the back for the 'groom'. It should have a track width of at least 130cm and be fitted with a working brake.

Potential
The season culminates at the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley, held in September. In addition, there is a National Championship.
