In synchronized diving, two divers form a team and attempt to perform dives simultaneously. Synchronized diving was adopted as an Olympic sport in 2000.
Popularity
While not a particularly popular participant sport, synchronized diving is new and one of the more popular Olympic sports with spectators.
Location
Synchronized diving as an artistic sport is a swimming pool activity, only undertaken in approved diving pools, (pools with a sufficient depth of water for diving safely). Although separated in competition this is a sport for both male and female.
Age
In common with its gymnastic relations, synchronized diving is an activity for the young. starting from the age of six or seven from poolside heights, and working up to the high boards. Competitive divers rarely go on past their late twenties.
Ability
Competitors posses many of the same characteristics as gymnasts including strength, flexibility, kinaesthetic judgment and air awareness, as well as the ability to synchronize movement with a partner.
Description
The two synchronized divers attempt to perform dives simultaneously. The dives are usually identical; however, sometimes the dives may be opposites, in what is called a pinwheel. This is an impressive spectacle, and requires great coordination between the team-mates. In these events, synchronicity is valued as highly as technical skill. Thus, if both divers perform their individual dives badly, but in the same way, they will still score fairly well.
Dedication
Divers do not consider themselves swimmers.the two sports are very different. Swimming is about times, diving is about art. Diving In common with other gymnastic type sports, constant practise and training is essential. In synchronized diving this is multiplied by the need to synchronise the whole dive routine with a partner. The team (pair) have to become as one. Even training session times have to be syncronised.
Potential
As with other artistic sports, perfecting the perfect sequence remains the dream. In competition there club, national, international and world competitions. The ultimate being to compete at the Olympic games.
