'Oyez Oyez' were the words you would hear and the ring of a hefty bell, that would announce the Town Crier had some news, people would stop what they were doing and gather round for an announcement.

Before Television and radio became so popular and efficient Town Criers were employed by the council to distribute news and some still are today as tradition requires.

Nowadays Town Criers are only usually found at competitions and civic ceremonials.

All that is required of a Town Crier is that he have a grasp of the English Language and have a loud voice with which to below the announcement as they do not use microphones.
Description
Town Criers date back hundreds of years, though few are seen on the streets today there is many a competition held. The criers dress up in traditional costume dating back usually to the 18th Century, of a tricorn hat, red jacket white britches and black boots, with a touching of gold decoration, the town crier is a well dressed man. The words shouted originally 'Oyez, Oyez' meaning 'hear ye', a call for attention. Oyez is the derivative of an Anglo-Norman word meaning listen.
