Hedge laying is the winter rural craft of creating livestock-proof barriers, by rejuvenation of existing hedgerows. Thus providing greater weather protection to crops and wildlife. Hedge laying is now considered an activity of conservation.
Popularity
Hedge laying has become popular as a recreational activity, for the conservation-ally minded or those who want something different that is physically demanding and mentally satisfying.
Location
Although hedge laying is considered a rural activity, almost any old hedge consisting of mainly coppicable species can be laid, no matter if it is found in an urban or rural location.
Age
There is no age restriction to hedge laying, providing the safety aspects of handling often sharp tools are observed. 10 or 12 years of age is often considered a minimum age to use the tools under the supervision of a competent adult.
Ability
Hedge laying is a skilled activity. It is also potentially dangerous requiring appropriate equipment and safety wear. Many agricultural colleges and the BTCV run courses
Description
Stems larger than about(8in), and side growth is cut away and debris cleared from the bottom of the hedge. The main upright stems (known as pleachers) are cut almost through near the ground on the opposite side of the face to the direction of lay and pushed over at an angle of approximately 35 degrees, Stakes of hazel or ash are driven into the hedge line every (2ft) and the pleachers woven between. Binders of hazel or sweet chestnut are then twisted around the top of the stakes to make secure.
Dedication
There are several regional styles, depending largely on the type of livestock to be contained and the species of hedge available to be laid. The general principles are similar. Hedge laying basics can be picked up quickly, although to become fully proficient takes several years experiance. hedge laying can be a full time winter occupation or done casually. although hedge-laying appears a slow moving activity, casual layers will probably find muscles they did not appreciate they had.
Potential
Although hedge laying is an activity of necessity or conservation, there are many local competitions to show off the individuals skills. A well laid hedge, kept properly trimmed, may last 50 years or more before it starts to thin at the base.
