RNLI. is the charity running the UK and Ireland's Lifeboats Rescue Service. Wholly independent, with volunteer crews and a national network of fundraising volunteers.
Popularity
The RNLI is often taken for granted, being thought of as one of our national emergency services, the difference being, unlike the other services, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution receives no financial help from central government.
Location
There are 233 RNLI lifeboat stations in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The RNLI also operates seasonal beach lifeguards units throughout the south west of England. Fund raising groups are located in towns and villages across the country.
Age
Although places in the lifeboats have to be earned and are by necessity for the fit, anyone of any age or phisical ability can help the, and will be welcomed by the RNLI.
Ability
People from all walks of life help the RNLI to save lives at sea. Thousands of volunteer crew members, shore helpers, committee members and fundraisers give their time, skill and commitment. There is a position for everyone within the RNLI.
Description
Volunteer crew members come from all walks of life and readily exchange leisure, comfort and sleep for cold, wet and fatigue. Their lifesaving work is essential, often difficult and sometimes dangerous. These days, less than 10% of crew members come from maritime backgrounds.
Dedication
The RNLI also aims to save lives by changing attitudes and behaviour among people who use the sea regularly. It also educates children and young people on how they can help and stay safe on or by the sea. In 2005 RNLI lifeboats rescued 8,104 people - an average of 22 people per day. RNLI Lifeguards assisted 9,930 people. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboats have saved more than 137,000 lives.
Potential
the potential of belonging to the RNLI is in the knowledge that you have made our coastal shoreline that little bit safer, and that your contribution has most certainly saved lives.
Closely
Related Activities
The RNLI is closely related to and works with other emergency services, both voluntary and retained; fire service, ambulance services, HM lifeguard service, cliff resque, beach lifeguard's and any other service as and when necessary.
Cost
There is no actual cost to belonging or helping the RNLI fund raise. Millions of pounds has to be raised annually to operate our life boat service, and to provide modern up to date lifeboats and equipment to enable the lifeboat men and women to do their job safely and as efficiently as is possible.
