In pigeon racing all birds start from a single point, but finish in their own loft. The fastest pigeon after a distance adjustment wins the race. Pigeons are trained to return to their loft from an early age. Both cock & hen birds are used for racing
Location
There are pigeon lofts in urban and country areas all over the UK and throughout large areas of the world. There are pigeon racing clubs in most areas of the country.
Description
To pigeon race an owner requires a loft, pigeon crates, rings, and officially approved clocks. When a bird returns home after a race its ring is removed and inserted into the clock thus recording the time of return, the clock is then returned to the race organisers to be checked against a master timer to calculate each pigeons flying time. The exact distance and flying times are then calculated and expressed in yards per minute, the fastest pigeon wins the race.
