Pancake day in Britain is held annually on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins, and originated from the need to use up rich food before the Fast of Lent. there are special pancake races, pancake tossing competitions and songs of celebration.

Popularity
Pancake day although it has lost its original significance, is as popular in the home today as it ever was. Public events are more popular than ever before, drawing large crowds of spectators, on an all to often cold and damp winters day.

Location
Pancake day is now celebrated with the eating and tossing of pancakes in homes across the country. Annual public pancake races and tossing competitions are held in Pubs, towns and villages across the country. A real day of tradition and fun.

Age
Pancake day is celebrated by by people of all ages, Young children become involved, only with the guiding hand of parents, as Safety must always be the first consideration. A child's first pancake toss is one of life's treasured milestones.

Ability
It takes no ability to enjoy tasting pancakes, everyone does. It must be remembered when tossing that it involves holding a heavy frying pan containing hot food and fat. Public events although not exclusively are dominated by the ladies.

Description
Pancake races and tossing the pancakes are two popular traditions that have stayed with us. Women race with pre-cooked pancakes in frying-pans, having to fully toss (turn) the pancakes a given number of times during the race. Tossing competitions involve tossing the pancake as many times as possible, with out dropping it in a given time. There used to be many songs and rymmes associated with pancake day these have largely died out.

Dedication
Pancakes were, and still are believed to be of good luck in many areas of the world as they contained many herbs and food items associated with prosperity and longevity. Typical cooking instructions are Heat the frying pan or griddle with a little lard, pour enough batter to cover the area needed. Cook until the top is dry, and then either toss or turn the pancake and cook the other side until brown. Ingredient's = flour, eggs, milk, fat (lard), salt, lemon and sugar for sprinkling.

Potential
If the eating of the pancakes was not potential enough, the winning of the local annual pancake race was and still is a highly cherished ambition.

Pancake day is one of those spontaneous days of national tradition and fun that everyone becomes involved with. New years eve, Valentines day, April fools day, May day, Halloween night, Bonfire night, Christmas, and Boxing day.

Cost
Historically there would have been no cost to the making of pancakes, as it was the using up of perishable foods that would go bad during the forthcoming fast. Nowadays the ingredients are specially bought in for the occasion.
