This sport is concentrated in hilly or mountainous areas, and is competed by both men and women. The rules ensure that the sport remains based on running and not mountaineering, although it does involve climbing and scrambling.
Popularity
Mountain runs are always extremely well attended but the sport is limited by the necessary terrain. Mountain running is an extreme version of cross-country running.
Location
In the UK the event is only found in the more rugged areas, more commonly found in northern England, Scotland and Wales.
Age
This sport can be competed by most ages, although the longer and more difficult courses do have age restrictions.
Ability
A general athletic fitness to compete over the course distance is necessary and the ability to negotiate the difficult and varied terrain to be encountered.
Description
There are two types of mountain running, Uphill Only normally held in Alpine regions of the world. And the second type Up and Down races these are the usual competed in the UK. The courses must avoid dangerous ascent's or descents, and are either marked by flags or the runners pass through a series of check points. Distances run varies from one to twenty five miles and are competed by both men and women, prizes are given to the first male and to the first woman to finish.
Dedication
A successful mountain runner must put in hours of regular all round fitness training as well as the mileage training of a distance runner, much of which should be of as hilly and variable nature as possible, Mountain running is an event that needs long term planning and training, it is not an event entered on a whim.

There are no national or world records kept in this event due to the wide variation in course and weather condition.

Cost
Costs are personal athletic clothing including a good pair of shoes. Running club fees, competition entry fees. The cost of travel and accommodation should be taken into account by many due to the isolated and regionalised nature of this event.
