Dolls' houses come in as many designs as their full size counterparts. From simple metal Triang mock Tudor houses made in the 1930's to modern dolls house and replicas of various styles and architectures throughout history.

Popularity
Dolls houses are popular with the miniaturist who love collectables and somewhere to store them 20th century dolls' house furniture is much more prolific and more affordable, especially since the hobby boomed from the 1960's onwards

Location
The best ways to increase a collection is to attend one of the specialist dolls fairs organised around the country where you will also meet craftsmen who make period pieces in all styles today. There are approximately 85 clubs in England

Ability
You will need the ability of a cabinet maker to create a dolls house properly and with a lasting finish. Able to read and follow drawings much the same as house building.

Description
Nowadays the miniature hobbyist has a world of assistance at their fingertips, unlike their earlier pioneers. Shops give easy access to the thousands of items, which go towards the creation of a dolls house. Not only is it accessible but affordable. Books and magazines can help fire the imagination with ideas and tips. Clubs for dolls house and miniature enthusiasts enable ideas to be swapped and shared. From early beginnings in the 16th century we now have a hobby available for everybody.

Dedication
This is an example of the dedication required, though obviously a little more than is necessary depending on your skills and need. The most famous example in the world is Queen Mary's dolls' house permanently on view at Windsor Castle. Designed by the architect Sir Edward Lutyens it look a team of craftsmen three years to complete between 1921 and 1924. It was made on a scale of 1:12 and everything in the house is perfection with running water, a full electricity supply and a working lift.

Potential
The potential of this is to have your skills on display at Doll Fairs, county shows and general exhibitions.

Closely Related Activities
Closely related activities include Cabinet making, interpreting plans and drawings into actual objects, wood lathe disciplines, design and decor.

Further Reading
There are many outlets and means that supply drawings and magazines to help you on your way in this pleasurable pastime.

Cost
Cost is an obvious factor and is dependant on how much you want to spend. Furniture Items if not making them can mount up the pounds, basically though it is a relatively cheap pastime that can be supplied through many off cuts if you know a wood shop prepared to let you have some.
