One of the traditional Japanese martial arts, kendo is a modern competitive sport. Two contestants, wearing protective armour, fight with bamboo swords. Footwork is crucial kendoka use short, fast, gliding steps, and sometimes jump for counter attacks
Location
An all year round, indoor activity. Practised in clubs across the country.
Ability
Kendo is not a sport for young children. it needs agility, speed of reaction and a disciplined mind.
Description
competitions are held on a smooth wooden floor measuring 10 x10m the centre is marked with a cross. duration of bouts is 3 or 5 minutes, a further 3 minutes is allowed if necessary to get a result. Scoring techniques cuts are made with the forward third of the shinai thrusts with the tip. Scoring areas for cuts are the temples, the breastplate and the right wrist and the left wrist when the left hand is at shoulder height or higher. for thrusts the throat. The winner is the first to two points.
Dedication
Regular training and practise is essential, for both agility and reflex's, if any progress is to be made in this sport.
