Lawn mower racing in a sense is a novelty sport taken seriously. It has 3 race categories from walking, to roller riding, and normal ride on. A 4th event has now been added for the mini tractor version. Oh! and yes the blades are removed.
Popularity
The man behind the sport was Jim Gavin, an Irishman who got together with a group of locals to create a cheap form of motorsport easily accessible to all. They realised that everyone had a lawn mower. So on that day in 73 it was born over a pint.
Location
The 12 date race calendar starts in May and ends in October, incorporating Their own British Championship, The World Championships, The British Grand Prix and the most famous of all, The 12 Hour Endurance Race, yes with lawn mowers.
Age
This is centered around a pint or two so you have to be legal drinking age in order to compete that way. However the sport attracts all ages, and is usually entered into in a spirit of fun rather than extreme competition; though taken seriously.
Ability
The ability is it will be of interest to anyone. The only ability required to get involved in, or wishing to get involved in Lawn mower racing, a motor sport at grass roots level! Is to be able to handle a lawn mower and cut to the chase in fun.
Description
Over the years lawn mower racing has attracted motor racing legends and celebrities. Sir Stirling Moss has won both the British Grand Prix and the annual 12-Hour Race. Derek Bell, five times Le Mans winner and twice World Sports Car Champion, has won the 12 Hour twice and one of those was with Stirling. The actor Oliver Reed, who lived locally, regularly entered a team.
Dedication
This is a fun sport as well as dedicated. Dedicated in that it is non profit and all proceeds are given to charity. So not only is it a fun weekend away, but it is a good cause at the same time. Competitors come from all over the country and enjoy racing from Wales to Norfolk and Yorkshire to Sussex, appearing at Country Shows, Fairs and Steam Rallies.
Potential
This is a sport to feed the need to have a mechanical race, have some fun, and is more a personal thing as well as competition (some do take it seriously). Performed at local shows and Fairs, as well as its own race venues.
