Heptathlon is a combined athletic event of seven disciplines, competed by woman, and normally held over a two day period. Disciplines include, 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m sprint, Long Jump, Javelin, finishing with a 800 run.
Popularity
Heptathlon is not as popular as athletic events involving only one discipline, as to be a heptathalete a woman must master seven events involving throwing, jumping and running. A heptathalete must be a complete athlete.
Location
The heptathlon is competed in most athletic stadiums able to cater for both track and field events.
Age
Individual events can be competed in from a very young age, but to have the overall strength and experience and mental endurance necessary to be able to compete in the heptathlon, very few athletes have before the age of eighteen years.
Ability
Before attempting the Heptathlon all seven disciplines must be mastered, and the stamina and general fitness achieved to compete in the seven disciplines over two days.
Description
The Heptathlon consists of seven events held in the order of, On the first day 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m running race. second day long jump, javelin, and finally a 800m running race, Scoring is according to IAAF(International Amateur Athletic Federation) tables. Points are awarded not for placings, but for achieving set times, heights and distances. The competitor with the most combined points after the seven events is the winner.
Dedication
To be successful in the heptathlon, an athlete must not only put in the necessary phisical and endurance training to be able to compete in seven events in two days, but the technique training in all seven disciplines. To be successful in the heptathlon takes an incredible amount of dedication, and is not an activity to be undertaken lightly.
Potential
To be classed a successful athlete in the heptathlon most people would consider that they had more than reached their potential. To win an olympic gold and be proclaimed the best complete woman athlete, a dream.
