Fencing is a modern Olympic sport that has its roots in over two thousand years of human history and swordsmanship. It involves physical speed, quickness of mind and technique, it is often described as physical chess.

Location
fencing is popular throughout the country, carried on indoors in normally fairly small friendly clubs, where you can come and learn to fence or develop any skills you may already have, and have fun whilst doing so.

Age
People fence for fun and also in competition from the age of eight or nine years old, right through to their sixties and seventies.

Ability
Fencing is one of the few competitive sports where able bodied and disabled can compete equally,

Description
Fencing is a contest between two individuals, involving hitting your opponent with a sword, be it Epee Sabre or Foil. hopefully before he or she hits you. Both Epee and Foil are thrust weapons and as such can only score with the point, the Sabre is a cut and thrust weapon scoring with all of the front edge and the top third of the back edge.

Dedication
Most clubs have at least a two hour session a week, where you will find qualified coaches to get you started and help you progress. Once you have got started you should continue lessons and fence against other more experienced fencers at the club. Like most sports extra practices at home or at other clubs can only be of benefit.

Potential
The potential of competitive fencing is competing at local, area or national levels, and who knows if you are dedicated enough you could make the Olympic team.
