In Show Jumping the horses jumping ability and the riders skill are tested under various conditions over a course of obstacles. Show Jumping is a sport of individuals and teams, in which men and women compete equally against each other.
Location
Show Jumping competitions are competed in both outdoor rural arena's, and indoor urban arena's through out the UK and the world.
Age
Show Jumping is competed by children on a leading rein as young four years of age, to riders well into their sixties.
Ability
Show Jumping like most equine events caters for a very wide range of both riders and horses, competitions range from ones in which the rider and the horses abilities are matched, to open classes where all abilities compete equally against each other.
Description
Show Jumping involves jumping a huge range of jumps of various heights and widths. There is also a wide range of competition normally four faults for knocking an obstacle down and two faults for a fence refusal as well as time faults for exceeding a set time for the course, lowest overall score wins, there are also clear round, speed, accumulator and high jump (puissance) competitions. Team events consist of four competitors, the best three competitors scores counting.
Dedication
As with all animal including equine activities it is a seven day a week activity both in building a relationship with, and in the looking after the horse, and building its general fitness. Actual jumping practice needs to be practised regularly, how regularly depends on the level of competition being competed.
Potential
There is a huge potential in Show Jumping ranging from local, county and national shows which can be entered as an individual to representing your country internationally and ultimately at the Olympic games.

Show Jumping is closely related to most equine disciplines, as they all share similar skills, it is particularly close to eventing, as they both use jumping skills.
Cost
All of the normal equine costs plus travel and competition entrance fees, travel costs can be very expensive at higher levels of competition, when great distances have to be traveled with your horse.
