Terriers are working dogs, generally kept for catching rats or rabbits. Terrier racing being a social sideline (useful when showing off a stud dog). Terriers are also very loving and loyal pets to own and as easy to keep as any other breed of dog.

Popularity
Following dog racing has been a sport for many years and is as popular an interest as that of horse racing, with spectators betting on the races. Unlike greyhound racing, in Terrier racing far more people are owners than pure spectators.

Location
You can quite happily keep a Terrier as a family pet. The training is casual and the racing far less formal, than other forms of dog racing. Race events are held on temporary straight line tracks, often at country shows and gatherings.

Age
There is no specific age for starting to race or work a terrier. Owning a dog as a family pet is great for all ages of the family.

Description
Terrier racing is a favourite country past time, with dog keepers wanting to show off their dogs abilities, especially breeders. Terrier races are raced over a convenient straight line distance for the venue, usually of between 20 and 50yds with owners behind the finish line shouting (screaming) words of encouragement to their beloved dogs.

Dedication
Terriers receive no or very little formal training on how to race, they are normally a working dog who is generally fit from exercise received in their daily routine. Terriers are a social breed of dog that loves to run and race.

Potential
Potential to own a great family pet, And the considerable pride gained from a reputation in the area of a person owning fine working dogs.

Closely Related Activities
Terrier racing is closer related to country sports, field sports, dog breeding and showing, than to the more formal types of dog racing.

Cost
The cost of keeping and racing a Terrier is no different from that of keeping any other small/medium sized dog, there are no hidden training or administrative costs, Terrier racing is a sport of the ordinary person.
