Mountain Biking is basically downhill cycling on specially developed, or adapted cycles. They will generally have sturdier frames and chunkier tyres than a standard cycle. From Leisure to International Competitions - all are possible with this sport.
Popularity
Mountain Biking has increased in popularity since around the mid 1970s. The introduction of specialist machines especially produced for the sport meant popularity increased dramatically within all walks of life. Many bikes may never see a mountain!
Location
Whereever you can find a hill (it doesn't have to be a mountain) which is navigable, you are pretty much assured of being able to ride down it. There are many Mountain Biking centres around the UK
Age
The sport can be enjoyed by all ages, as long as they are reasonable fit as some courses can be physically demanding. Beginners can enjoy the sport as well as Experts. For those wishing to enter into racing an advisory lower age limit of 12 years.
Ability
For people with no/limited experience of Mountain Biking, gravel tracks and smooth trails. Experts riding over any terrain including rocky, severe descents, drop-offs. Intermediate ability on rougher and steeper terrain, all abilities can participate
Description
Mountain Biking can be for fun or you can go on to domestic and International competitons. For domestic competition the most important events are the National Series and National Championships. for even further advancement, competitors can go on to compete in the World Cup. Events usually consist of Cross Country (endurance racing), Downhill (quickest top to bottom) and 4-Cross (4 riders compete against each other over a mainly downhill course)
Dedication
All Mountain Biking requires a mixture of fitness and control of the machine. To start with just getting a bike and exploring the countryside is sufficient. Off-road riding skills come with practice and experience. Cross-country is the natural starting point as it is less technically challenging. Gain more training and experience and you will ready to tackle the Downhill and 4-Cross events. whatever your chosen discipline - fun or competition - practice makes perfect.
Potential
The sport has the potential to take you all the way to the Olympic Games or the World Cup.

Cost
Mountain Bike (expect to pay up to £500 or more if you are thinking of competitons). Leisure bikes for light off-road use can be picked up for about £200. Allow for protective gear (helmet at least), plus maybe gloves and knee/elbow protectors and footwear.
