The hobby of collecting badges which may have come from all manner of caps, generally of a military nature.
Popularity
Some collectors prefer to amass examples according to regiment or discipline. Some may have an interest in say army or navy through a familty link. It is a good way to learn a little history while enjoying a pleasurable hobby.
Location
A benefit of badge collecting comes with being able to find them in unusual places. Specialist military auctions or sales should reap results but you should also look in car boot sales and collectors and antique fairs too.
Age
Collectors can be of all ages and you are never too young or old to start a collection. Many may start when they are given a badge from a former military-serving family member.
Ability
Badge collecting can be great fun and also very interesting. If you have an interest in military collectibles or military history, then the hobby will be very rewarding indeed.
Description
Each badge represents an important historical era. Many badges have small features that have been incorporated into the badge by the designers and makers many years ago to commemorate for example a famous battle or event that the particular regiment fought in. Many collectors will say that the hobby is one of the most fascinating and is still probably the cheapest as good badges, some quite old, can still be picked up for a few pounds.
Dedication
It is interesting to try to investigate the history of the badge if at all possible, as you may not be aware of the regiments' past glories on the battlefields. Also the inter connections between regiments that may have fought together or may have been unified years earlier. All of this information contained in each badge is now British history. These regiments will never die, they will live forever through the badges and that are part of our badge collections.
Cost
Badges can be picked up for a few pounds, some antique and rare badges for a lot more. It is possible to obtain replica badges or recasts of original metal badges.
