A common pastime played by children - albeit often initiated by adults to occupy bored children on car journeys. One person secretly chooses an object that they can 'spy with their little eye', the others take turns to guess what the object is.
Age
A family game that can played by a mixed age group, from the age of four years and upwards.
Ability
"I spy with my little eye" is a guessing game usually played by families with young children, partly to assist in both observation and in alphabet familiarity. It is often played to alleviate children’s boredom during a long car journey.
Description
One person starts by choosing an object (perhaps a cow) and says "I spy with my little eye, something beginning with C". The other players look around and suggest things it might be: "Crow" (no), "Car" (no), "Cloud" (no), "Cow" - yes. The person who guesses correctly gets to choose the next object.
Dedication
When played while traveling it needs to be decided before play what to do about things that are no longer visible (the field with the cows that is a mile back - usually permitted but the 'I spy'er has to say "I can't see it any more".
An alternative version to the game uses phrases - "I spy with my little eye something beginning with B A W C" for "Black and white cow".
Another variation of the game is to play using colours, such as 'I spy with my little eye something that is green'.
