Canoe slalom is one of the most spectacular watersports, demanding skill, stamina and courage. The aim is to run a rapid river course marked by gates fast, and without touching.
Popularity
In 1992 canoe slalom returned to the Olympic Games and there has been a massive increase in interest outside slalom's traditional areas.
Location
There are many clubs and the best way to practice is to go along to a club where you can participate in a safe controlled environment.
Age
Competitors can take part from the age of 12 upwards.
Ability
If you haven't canoed before, a starter course is a good idea. Or you can join a club. Lots of clubs have a slalom night when their slalom paddlers practice.
Description
Whitewater slalom, which was originally modelled on ski slalom, began in Switzerland in 1932. Slalom canoeing had begun on flat water, but soon switched to white water rapids on natural rivers. The sight of skill, strength and courage pitted against powerful water makes slalom an exciting spectator sport both live and on TV.
Dedication
Slalom is intended to test white water skills in a safe environment. The object of the sport is to negotiate a pre-defined course set by the course designer. The winner of the event will have negotiated all the ?gates? in the fastest time, preferably without getting time penalties, which are given for hitting and missing gates. To be good you need to become a good paddler as control of the boat is the most important skill required.
Potential
From club level, participants can go on to national, European, world and Olympic championships
