A popular French equine activity, introduced into Great Britain in the 1990s under the name of BHS Trec, see HIPS activity 721.

Popularity
BHS Trec was introduced into this country in 1998, and is based on the French discipline of Le Trec. It is now one of the fastest growing equine activities, because of its wide appeal and the building of a good partnership between horse and rider.

Location
BHS Trec events are competed widely across the country, and are normally held over one or two days. The emphasis being on enjoying horse riding and an appreciation of the wonderful British countryside.

Age
BHS Trec is suitable for riders of all ages and ability, but when in competition riders of under sixteen years must compete in pairs, one of whom must be over sixteen years of age.

Ability
Training days are held widely across the UK. but really you do not have to be afraid to just begin by trying a competition, BHS trec is designed to be manageable to every rider of all abilities, the emphasis is on fun.

Description
BHS Trec normally comprises of three disciplines 1) Orienteering, Using a map you must find your way along a route via a number of check points, at a predetermined speed for each section. 2) Control of paces. You will need to be able to canter as slowly as possible for a short distance and walk back as fast as as possible. 3)Cross country / Obstacle course. Obstacles that may be encountered are fallen logs, opening and shutting gates and leading your horse down an incline.

Dedication
As all the skills necessary for BHS Trec are the ones used for every day riding, there is no extra dedication necessary, however as with all competitions of all sports the more practise you put the more accomplished you will become.

Potential
Although there are various levels of competition leading to International championship level, the main potential of trec is to improve a riders skills and enjoyment of horse riding.

Cost
Apart from entry fees which normally range from £5 to £20 there are no costs other than the normal costs involved with keeping a horse.
