Driven shooting is the most formal type of shooting, A line of beaters walk towards a line of guns. The beaters tap the undergrowth with sticks as they walk, to encourage the birds out of cover and into flight, towards the positioned and waiting guns

A very popular sport with organised shoots on estates throughout the country. The taking of game is regulated as to when you may shoot. For this reason depending on what is to be taken driven shooting takes place between August 12th and 31st January.

A countryside activity who's actual location is Dependent on the type of game being sought, Pheasant and Woodcock shooting is normally in or close to woodland whereas Grouse are found on the open moors and Duck are attracted by flight ponds.

Although the only restriction to age is that of the gun licence, children are rarely invited to shoot, They are more normally invited to beat, an activity they seem to relish.

The ability to use a gun safely, is a must. Any one considered shooting recklessly will be reprimanded and is unlikely to be invited again. Physical fitness is less important than rough shooting as the birds are driven towards the standing guns.

Driven shooting is as much a social event as a sporting one, full of etiquette built up over the years to promote safety and sportsmanship within the sport. The weapon used is a twelve bore shotgun, and the quarry that may or may not be shot on the day, is stipulated by the host before shooting begins. The host or the keeper position the guns in a position where they consider the game will fly and give good sport, several drives are shot during a days shooting.

There is no set amount of dedication necessary to shooting. Ranging from a social gun who is invited once or twice a year, to a keen gun who will shoot two or three days a week during the season. As a reflex sport it is obviously better to shoot regularly.

As driven shooting is not a competitive sport there is no competitive potential. As a guns reputation grows as to shooting ability and sportsmanship, he is more likely to be invited on more prestigious and well keeperd shoots.
