Trailtrax also known as Trail Quest is the relatively new, and rapidly growing activity of orienteering on a mountain bike. Trailtrax is suitable for males and females of a wide age and ability range, competing as individuals or pairs.

Popularity
This activity is rapidly becoming more popular, largely due to the wide range of person able to compete. There are competitions in most counties throughout the UK most weeks of the year.

Location
Trailtrax competitions are normally held in fairly remote areas, with either a big area of open public woodland, moorland or countryside, or areas well serviced with lanes , tracks and bridle/cycle paths. The more physically demanding the better.

Age
Competitions are split in to age and ability groupings, also individual and pairs. Trailtrax can be enjoyed by the most competitive of riders as well as those wanting to simply enjoy the countryside. In Trailtrax tactics are as important as speed.

Ability
Before attempting this activity riders should be competent at mountain biking off road, as much of the coarse will be on bridle tracks and across open or wooded countryside. Riders must also be able to navigate using only a map and compass.

Description
Before starting competitors are given a map on which a number of check points of varying points value are shown, and a race time. The aim of the activity is to pick up as many points as possible, by visiting as many of the check points as possible, in the allotted race time. Riders need not visit all check points, deciting wether to visit as many lower scoring checks as possible, or visit fewer but higher scoring check points, these are more isolated or difficult to access.

Potential
Most Traitrax competions are individual events. There are no records to be broken as like cross country running, no two courses are ever the same.
