Six-a-side football is a variation of football (soccer) each team fields six players (five outfield players and a goalkeeper), rather than the usual eleven. Other differences include, a smaller pitch, smaller goals, and a reduced game duration.

Popularity
A very popular activity, reduced number football is often played under floodlights, giving the opportunity for evening play thus allowing those who may not be available at weekends or in daylight hours, the opportunity to play competitive football.

Location
Six-a-side football games are normally played on a synthetic surface, which may be indoors or outside. Pitches are often found at local sports and recreation centres.

Age
Footballers start from a very young age with mini leagues being put on for very young children usually aged around five years, there is no upper age limit it just depends on your level of fitness.

Ability
Ability largely depends on the standard of the team being joined. A good norm would be, a good level of fitness and be able to work as a team player. Football is an activity played by both males and females, although restricted to single sex teams.

Description
Common rule variations from standard eleven-a-side football are typically adopted for competitive or semi-formal six-a-side leagues or tournaments. Two of the most common rules are the head height rule, which states that a player cannot kick the ball above head height or the opposing team is given a free kick, and the semi-circular penalty area is restricted to the goalkeeper.

Potential
There are many leagues and tournaments that can be entered, although to many it is a social way of keeping fit.
