A novelty fun activity, belt sander racing, is the racing of electric builders belt sanders. The race is held over any flat surface with low sides. the sides are used to keep the sanders on the track as they only have forward movement, no steering.
Popularity
Not a pastime followed by a large number of participants, Although there is a belt sander racing club, most events come from a group of friends challenging each other to a race.
Age
There is no official age restriction to belt sander racing, although it must be remembered that electricity is involved, and the event is very often held in a public house. Children often accompany a parent and enter as a family team.
Description
Standard belt sanders are raced over a short cource normally restricted only by the size of the venue. normally the races are group start races, with all of the excitement of jostling and barging on the race track. Sometimes a time trial time race is held, there are no firm rules. There is no restriction on modifications to your sander, although they are rarely attempted. Organise an event and enjoy yourself, betting is frequently associated with an event.
Cost
A standard off the shelf belt sander costs from £30 upwards, and can be purchased from any D.I.Y. or hardware store.
