Squash is a very fast, competitive indoor racquet sport, played between two players of either sex (four players in doubles) using 'standard' rackets in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball.

Popularity
Squash a game of English origins, now played in 150 countries around the world. Squash provides an excellent cardiovascular workout. In one hour of squash, a player may expend approximately 700 to 1000 calories.

Location
Squash courts are rarely found in private homes, they are normally found within leisure, sports and fitness centres.

Age
Children can play competitive squash from the age of ten, seniors from eighteen. Many squash venues now require the use of eye protection and some association rules require that all juniors and doubles players must wear eye protection.

Ability
The court size is 32ft long X 21ft wide. The front wall has a 'service' line 6ft above the floor with the 'tin' (the equivalent of a net) 17 inches high. The floor is marked with a transverse 'half-court' line and into two rear 'quarter courts'.

Description
The served ball must strike the front wall above the service line and below the out line and return into the opposite quarter court. The players then take turns hitting the ball against the front wall. The ball may be hit whilst still in the air or before its second bounce. The ball may also be struck against any of the other three walls before reaching the front wall. The rally continues until a player is unable to return his or her opponent's shot or makes a mistake.

Dedication
In the traditional British game a point is scored only by the server (when the receiver is unable to return the ball to the front wall before it has bounced twice). When the receiver wins the rally, they are awarded only the right to serve. Games are usually played to 9 points, first player to win 3 games wins the match.
