Spinning is the ancient craft of creating yarn, thread, rope or cable from various raw fibrous materials. Materials used, fall into three categories plant, animal and nowadays synthetic. And are used for clothing, ropes, and clothes.

Popularity
Before the industrial revolution spinning was a necessary activity of most homes in the country to make clothing and and blankets for the home. Today it is a relaxing past time for the individualist, and those involved in a self sufficient lifestyle.

Location
Spinning is best carried out in the home, on your own where you can give it your sole attention and concentration, Spinning as a craft is often demonstrated at country and craft shows. Spinning is a wonderfully relaxing and satisfying pastime.

Age
Any age, from the youngest of children can spin a simple yarn out of discarded wool found attached to a fence while out for a country walk, spinning this together to make a simple strand will give them a great sense of achievement and satisfaction.

Ability
With a little practise and guidance anyone can spin a simple fibre, to produce a fine strand of constant thickness and tension takes a lifetime of practise and a great deal of patience.

Description
Spinning is the twisting together of separate fibres to produce one long continuous yarn, which eventually will be used in the knitting or weaving together to make clothing or blankets etc for the home. Spinning can be carried out using a suspended stick called a spindle, which is used to twist and tease out the wool into a yarn and then wind the wool onto. Spinning wheels were developed to produce faster yarn production these may be electric or foot operated.

Dedication
Hobby and small scale artisan spinners spin their own yarn to produce specific yarn qualities and to produce yarns not commercially available. They may also spin for self sufficiency and a sense of accomplishment, and of course the meditative qualities of spinning its self.

Potential
The sense of wearing an item of clothing produced by hand, and totally unique to yourself.

Spinning is closely related to weaving, And all needlecraft activities such as knitting, crochet and tapestry. Spinning is also closely linked to those interested in a selfsufficent life style, and those keeping a few specialist sheep or goats.

Cost
The cost of spinning is in time rather than monetary. A spindle can be purchased for a few pounds where as a spinning wheel will cost a couple of hundred pounds. A complete sheep's fleece weighing two or three kilos can be purchased from £2 depending on the variety of sheep it came.
