Skateboarding is a relatively modern sport. Originating in America in the 1950s as sidewalk surfing. Skateboarding can be an art, hobby, sport or a method of transportation. It is often portrayed by the media as an extreme sport.

Popularity
It has been estimated that there are approximately 12.5 million skateboarders in the world, found mainly in urban areas of the developed world.

Location
As skateboarding has lost its rebellious reputation and become socially accepted many local authorities have installed skateparks in their recreational areas, Public skateparks are almost always situated outdoors.

Age
In a recently taken poll eighty percent of skateboarders polled, who had used a board in the previous year were under the age of 18, and of these 74 percent were male.

Ability
To skateboard successfully a potential skateboarder must have nerve and an allround sense of balance.

Description
A skateboard is a narrow wheeled platform, rode rather like a water surfer. There are three types of skateboarding; Speed, Slalom and the most common Trick, which is now normally carried out in a skatepark. A skatepark is a purpose-built recreational environment for skateboarders, to ride and develop their sport and art. A skatepark may contain half-pipes, quarter pipes, handrails, trick boxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, full pipes, stairs, and any number of other trick-oriented objects

Dedication
A skateboarding trick, is a maneuver performed on a skateboard while skateboarding. Learning and perfecting new tricks is the major goal of many skateboarders, for whom most of the time spent skateboarding is spent on tricks. There are dosens of tricks that can be grouped into five categries; Flat ground tricks, Aerials, Flip tricks, Slides and grinds, and Lip tricks.

As with all recreational activities that have developed from the street, skateboading has its own slang language.
