Competitors race sea-going yachts over off shore courses, the yachts are divided into classes, and races range in distance from short afternoon events to great round the world adventures lasting seven or eight months. Men and women compete equally.

Found everywhere in the world where there are suitable seas, racing round islands, across seas and oceans.
Age
All though there are events that cater for young people. offshore racing is mainly for adults, due largely to the time involved when competing in the races, and the very basic living conditions encountered on board. Good basic health is essential.
Ability
Before embarking on off shore racing, a good competence in sailing should be achieved and a sound knowledge of maritime law and navigation. A good start is to crew on a off shore cruise, knowledge will be gained that cannot be found in a book.
Description
Off Shore Racing competitors not only have to race the other yachts in the race which are all individually handicapped, they have to compete with the weather, be it the danger and challenge of a sudden squall, or raging storm or the frustration of being becalmed, add to this if a solo sailor the isolation and lack of rest from being always alert, or if one of a crew the pressures of living in cramped close conditions with the other crew members. No two races or race conditions are ever the same.
Dedication
Although some people catch the bug and racing becomes almost a full time occupation, to others it is the ultimate once in a lifetime adventure. The safety of a yacht and her crew is the responsibility of the owner. Who must ensure that the yacht is thoroughly seaworthy, properly equipped and manned by an experienced crew who are physically fit to experience bad weather.

Off Shore Yachtsman not only have to be competent sailors and navigators, they must be proficient in all skills of repairs from events that could spoil the smooth running of the yacht, including medical and first aid.
Cost
Costs involved with this activity vary enormously depending on the size of boat, duration of race, number in the crew and individuals status in the crew. Owning and operating an ocean going vessel will cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. This is not an activity to be attempted on the cheap, safety and preparation are life saving.
