Sheep shearing is an annual event, to remove the fleece from a sheep by clipping, preferably in one piece. Wool used to be a major World industry, nowadays however the removal of a sheep's fleece is more for the welfare of the sheep.

Popularity
Sheep shearing as a hobby or pastime is growing in popularity, as it can be a lucrative sideline, due to the relatively short shearing season, and the decline in professional shearers.

Location
Shearing takes place everywhere where sheep are kept. the shearing period is earlier in the south of England than the north by a good two or three weeks due to the difference in climate. June and July being the main months.

Age
Sheep shearing is a young mans activity. a shearer must be old enough to handle an adult sheep competently (teenage), and most have had enough by the time they are fifty , although there are the exceptions who go on well into their seventies.

Ability
There are numerous short courses run by agricultural colleges and the wool marketing board that teach shearing techniques. A shearer needs to be physically strong and supple especially in the back, as a shearer is bent for most of the time shearing.

Description
The normal shearing method is to start sitting the sheep on her rump, clip the belly, open the wool on her throat and shear the left side of her head and then around the head keeping going on down the left side as far as you can reach, roll her over and clip down the right side. The fleece should come right off the body except for the hind quarter. Lay the sheep flat on her side and remove the remaining fleece. The sheep should then leap up and leave the entire fleece in one piece behind her.

Dedication
Once the art of shearing is mastered the technique is yours. some shearers shear their own few sheep annually, while others travel the area, making a social event of it. shearing any amount of sheep is one of the most physically demanding activities, but very satisfying, a well sheared sheep is looked at with pride.

Potential
There are very few shearing competitions, but there is always demand for good shearers to give exhibitions at country shows and fairs. A well Shawn (presented) sheep will add value to the animal in the sale or show ring.

Closely Related Activities
The keeping of Sheep, Goats and Lamas. There are no other closely associated activities, shearers are normally interested in other country and rural activities, and there is a loose connection to wool related activities such as spinning and weaving.

Cost
A professional set of shearing equipment will cost more than ?2,000, while a set suitable for a small flock of up to a hundred sheep will cost ?500, a pair of hand shears (still very much used )?15. There is also the need to have the cutters regularly sharpened which is a specialized task.
