Quoits is one of the oldest outdoor games, and as such has many local variations. The object of the game is to throw the Quoit (a flattened iron ring) over or as close as possible to a pin known as a Hob, up to some 21yds away,
Location
Played socially in homes every where. More commonly played competitively in Scotland and Wales and more rural parts of England. A popular variation is deck quoits which uses rope quoits and was developed to be played as a recreation on ocean liners.
Age
quoits is played by both men and women of all ages and physical ability, although the length of the throw and the weight of the quoit has to be modified to suit.
Description
two pins are knocked into the ground some 18yds apart with a 3ft circle marked around it. the object being to throw the quoit from a line equal with the hob at one end to encircle the hob at the other end. each player has two quoits which are thrown alternately with the opponent, In team events it is a very tactical game placing blocking shots to prevent the opponents getting close to the Hob, Not unlike bowls. After all players have thrown their two quoits they throw back from the other end.
