Paint by number (or painting by numbers) is a popular coloring book-style hobby. Artists are given an empty piece of detailed line art in which every shape, shadow, highlight, and toned area of the picture is drawn distinctly, with a number placed inside. It thus becomes the artist's job to match each number with the intended color (usually indicated on an instructions sheet). When completed, the coloring-in process will create a detailed, attractive painting.
