Mountaineering and Rock Climbing is basically as the title depicts, taking challenging courses, these days usually predefined with guides for safety. Man has always had the need to see things from a larger angle and this is one way.
Popularity
This is an extremely popular sport especially among the younger and more adventurous generation, even though many older people still enjoy this pastime.

There are many clubs throughout the UK, further searching in HIPS will help you.
Age
This is a sport for young and old a like, obviously there are restrictions, but children can start off with small rock climbing and progress as they get older.
Ability
Obvious abilities would be physical fitness, read maps and compasses, ability to lead and to be led. Knowledge of first aid and ability to apply, maybe a St Johns ambulance course would be beneficial.
Description
Rock Climbing and Mountaineering is a fun sport if done correctly. There is proper equipment and clothing needed such as tents/Bivis, back packs and hydration equipment, stove, torch, walking boots, proper wind anorak's and loads of other bits such as your ropes pegs and other aids depending on how high or deep you go including a good Global satellite monitoring system in case of misadventure.
Dedication
Dedication required is in the ability to do things properly, be kitted out properly and abide by the rule book. Outside of this you are making yourself vulnerable to the elements.

Potential is to learn and be involved in team work, to see sights many are envious of. To discover the history of our lands and formation.

Cost
Cost is dependant on how far you want to go, how long you want to do it for, be it a day trip or a weeks excursion. It is not cheap to kit out, but once you have the required tools of the trade it is something you can use over and again, depending on fair wear and tear especially ropes, nuts, hexes and pitons.
