Speedway is a highly specialized form of motor cycle sport. Riders on special speedway machines race around an oval track of 350yd, loosely surfaced with ash or shale. A special riding technique is required as the bikes have no brakes.
Age
There are two ways of enjoying the sport of speedway firstly as a spectator this is a family activity suitable enjoyable to all ages and to male and female. Secondly as a rider where to start in speedway you need to be at least 16yrs.
Description
Races are usually over four laps which are always ridden in a counterclockwise direction. Teams consist of four riders plus a reserve. Each race has four riders and meetings are arranged so that each rider rides against every competitor(20 races). The start is made from a stationary position with the engine running and the front wheel against the tapes. As the machines have no brakes the riders are forced to broadside their machines into the corners at speeds of up to seventy miles an hour.
Dedication
dedication is essential as this is a team event with regular competitions. Race fitness is all important as is general physical fitness.
