Taekwondo is a martial art that in today's form of self defence has evolved by combining many different styles of martial arts that existed in Korea over the last 2,000 years and some martial arts styles from countries that surround Korea.
Popularity
Since Modern-day Taekwondo's official birth on April 11, 1955, its development as a sport has been rapid. Over 30 million people practice Taekwondo in more than 156 countries.
Location
There are over a 120 clubs throughout the United Kingdom and is a growing sport among all walks of life, young and old, male or female.
Age
Like most Martial Arts this is open to all age groups and usually mixed classes.

Description
Taekwondo incorporates the abrupt linear movements of Karate and the flowing, circular patterns of Kung-fu with native kicking techniques. Over fifty typically Chinese circular hand movements can be identified in modern Taekwondo. A few of the earlier martial arts styles that contributed to Taekwondo are: T'ang-su, Taek Kyon, also known as Subak, Tae Kwon, Kwonpup and Tae Kwonpup. There are also influences from Judo, Karate, and Kung-fu.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art practiced all over the world. Its popularity stems from many reasons. Virtually everyone who is involved with this art agrees that it is an outstanding way to improve physical fitness, mental focus, and self-discipline. Children who study taekwondo often exhibit greater motivation dedication and increased self-esteem. Besides these benefits, participants can train for competition and learn effective self-defense techniques.

Cost
There is great variation in costs between clubs for membership, tuition and annual fees. Never part with any money or sign any contracts that legally bind you to a membership for any period of time on your first lesson. Find out additional costs with doing the martial arts - and ask about uniforms - gradings - student licence's - insurance - yearly membership fee's, joining fee's and kit that you may need to use within the club i.e. sparring kit or anything else that you may need.
