Origins of kung fu are accepted to have come from the Shaolin Temple China around the 6th or 7th century A.D. by a visit to the temple by Bodhidharma who introduced Buddhism from India at that time. The story In part is myth and in part truth.

Popularity
Kung Fu is probably the most popular of all the Martial Art Forms and was made popular by the emergence of Bruce Lee in Hollywood. For some he has been around a while but youngsters still latch onto his screen skills and want to know more.

Location
There are over a hundred clubs nation wide and sure to be one near you. Further browsing of the Hips site will give you that information.

Age
There is no age limit on this sport and can be enjoyed by both young and old alike, particularly a good all round family involvement sport, for keeping fit in both body and mind.

Ability
A student who does not try and who relies on the teacher for their inspiration will be only as good as a person that follows another person hoping that some of the good will rub off on themselves.

Description
One advantage that Kung Fu has over other arts, is that it does not require you to be excessively fit, strong or supple. In fact, Kung Fu works from the assumption that the human body is quite fragile and produces techniques that work with this as accepted fact, overcoming what it sees as the frailties of the human form when fighting. Legend has it that it was created by a woman who wanted to ensure there was a training system that did not rely on size or brute strength to be effective.

Dedication
Dedication in essence, is primarily concerned with what you do with your body and how you do it. If that sounds a rather vague explanation, it is. At it's heart, Wing Chun (Kung Fu) is driven by a desire to avoid harm - from harm caused by violence from others but also the harm caused in the process of defending oneself. This means that Wing Chun (Kung Fu) techniques, when performed correctly, should be effective in subduing an aggression, but avoid injury in the process of doing so.

Potential
The potential is to have peace of mind in today's society of threats and possible harm that we would not normally know how to handle, for both ourselves and our children.

Cost
There is great variation in costs between clubs for membership, tuition and annual fees. Never part with any money or sign any contracts that legally bind you to a membership for any period of time on your first lesson. Find out additional costs with doing the martial arts - and ask about uniforms - gradings - student licence's - insurance - yearly membership fee's, joining fee's and kit that you may need to use within the club i.e. sparring kit or anything else that you may need.
