Many laymen are under the impression that modern day kickboxing originated in Thailand, Japan or elsewhere in the Far East, in fact, the real origins of the sport are revealed by the real name by which is was known, full contact karate.

Popularity
Today the WKA (World Kickboxing Association) is world's oldest and largest sanctioning body, and continues to grow. There is virtually a club in every county of the United Kingdom accommodating this very popular growing sport.

Location
Kick Boxing is an extremilyy popular activity in the UK. So there is sure to be a club near you. It is an indoor activity and closely related to gymnasiums containing a boxing ring.

Age
Kickboxing is open to all ages though a check around clubs will confirm this.

Ability
Kickboxing requires a great deal of fitness and agility. It is not for the faint-hearted and you have to be prepared to be hurt and to hurt. You have to have the ability to train really hard and a bit more.

Description
Kickboxing was aided in its rise, when Bruce Lee exploded onto the big screen. The first time anything resembling what we now know as Full Contact Kickboxing began in the United States in the early 1970's as Full Contact Karate. In September 1974, in Los Angeles, the first ever World Championships of Full Contact Karate were hosted. At that time Karate's own sanctioning body, the PKA, provided the official nod that was required.

Dedication
From beginner to advanced level, students will find the classes exciting, fun and challenging. Their progress is complemented through a belt system but is rewarded by tremendous growth in self-esteem, confidence, fitness and above all requires a lot of dedication and self discipline. You need to practice day in, day out just to even begin to understand the essence of it. A nice understanding of the culture can help you have a better understanding of the art.

Potential
There is the potential to graduate and represent your country in international competitions beyond local inter club activities.

Closely Related Activities
This sport incorporates many sports in a sense such as boxing and karate. It is a mental application and involves people skills, judgement, self discipline and respect.

Cost
You should always be given at least your first lesson free - any more than your first is even better - Never part with any money or sign any contracts that legally bind you to a membership for any period of time on your first lesson. Find out additional costs with doing the martial arts - and ask about uniforms - gradings - student licence's - insurance - yearly membership fee's, joining fee's and kit that you may need to use within the club i.e. sparring kit or anything else that you may need
