The shot put is an olympic athletics field event competed by both males and females. The Shot Put involves putting (throwing in a pushing motion) a heavy metal ball as far as possible. The metal ball is called the shot.
Popularity
Shot put competitions have been held at the Summer Olympic Games since their inception, and is also included as an event in the indoor world championships. The shot put originates from Highland games 'stone put'.
Location
Athletic clubs and organisations throughout the UK hold many local and national events, with weekly practises.
Age
There is no age limit to participate in athletics. Some clubs offer junior training and competition, with different age group categories.
Ability
To throw the heavy metal ball, if the thrower does not push the ball out and throws it like a baseball, the thrower may receive injury. Throwing a shot requires immense strength and power as well as grace and balance.
Description
The shot is a metal ball with a minimum weight of 7.26kg for men and 4kg for women. The shot is put (thrown) by the competitor from within a circle, which must not be stepped out of until the shot has landed, only one hand may be used to put the shot and the hand must not drop below the starting height during the putting action.
Dedication
A shot put athlete not only must put in ordinary athletic training, but concentrate on arm and upper body training, as well as putting technique and balance.
