Korfball is a competitive mixed gender team game consisting of two teams of four woman and four men in each. Goals are scored by throwing a ball into the opponents basket, essentially a fast passing game that forbids physical contact.
Popularity
Originating in the early 1900s it is now played in over forty countries throughout the world, being most popular in the Benelux countries.
Location
Korfball although spread through out Britain, it is most popular in South London and Kent. Korfball can be played both indoors and outside on a pitch measuring 40 X 20m indoors, 60 X 30 outdoors. The pitch is marked into two equal parts.
Age
Korfball was originated as a competitive ball game that could be played by children of both gender together. children can play from the age of eight years, there are six age categories in Britain, under 9, 11, 13, 15, 19 and seniors.
Ability
To reach the higher levels of Korfball, agility and the ability to catch and pass the ball speedily are necessary. The game was devised to be played by all, hence both sexes play together, and all players play in all positions during a game.
Description
Korfball is played with a ball similar to a soccer ball, and is essentially a passing game as no player may run with the ball, players are positioned two men and two woman from each team in each zone, which they must not leave. The ball is caught and passed by the hands and no other part of the body, the defending team may block or hinder the attacker but must not make phisical contact. Every time two goals have been scored players change zone, eg attackers become defenders, defenders attackers.
Dedication
The duration of a game is two periods of thirty minutes with an interval of between five and fifteen minutes. Teams change ends at half time.
Potential
The potentials of korfball are to play in the national league which is made up from teams in the minor leagues. World champs every four years. European champs every four years. Europer cup played annually between national champions.
