Hovering is the recreational use of a hovercraft, for either racing or cruising. A hovercraft is a vehicle, which is supported by a cushion of pressurised air, contained by a rubber skirt, and is able to operate just as easily over water or land.

Popularity
There are an increasing number of small homebuilt and kit-built hovercraft used for fun and racing purposes, used mainly on inland lakes and rivers but also in marshy areas and in some estuaries.

Location
Hovercraft can be used on any suitable private land or water with the landowners permission. The user has a responsibility to ensure that he does not create a nuisance (eg with noise), or endanger other people or animals.

Age
National Formula Junior racing is available for young drivers, both boys and girls, aged between 11 and 16 years. They can enter Hovercraft with a total engine capacity not exceeding 250cc.

Ability
Before a new Junior driver can take part in their first Formula Junior Race, they are required to pass a simple manoeuvrability test and answer a number of questions based on the operation of their craft.

Dedication
You do not need a licence under UK law, but it may be advisable to acquire an HCGB drivers licence if only as proof that you are competent. The Hovercraft Club of Great Britain (HCGB) organises and is responsible for inland and coastal cruising hovercraft races in various venues across the UK.

Cost
If used in public places, or on common land, the craft should be adequately insured.
