Street Hockey is a spontaneous game of hockey. played either on roller or on line skates, shoes or ice skates Using a naturally found local venue as a playing area, eg street, playground or car park. Rules vary depending on local circumstances.
Popularity
Street hockey in many parts of the world is the equivalent of playground or street football in Britain, where football is the national game. Street or Road Hockey is commonly played in America and Canada, where hockey is more popular than football.
Location
Street hockey is played in streets, playgrounds or car parks, normally with a tarmac surface. Street hockey is most commonly played in countries where ice or roller hockey are more popular than the field hockey we know and play in the UK.
Age
Street hockey can be played by both male and females, and is played by a wide range of ages, teams are normally picked from people of similar age, but not exclusively. Team numbers vary slightly depending on availability, (everyone getting a game).
Ability
Street hockey is often the first taste of playing hockey a player gets, it is the place to gain experiance, everyone one has to start sometime. If the game is being played on skates, then obviously for safety's sake a competency on skates is a must.
Description
The game and rules of street hockey resemble as far as is practical those of ice hockey, the game of which street hockey aspires to. the pitch size is variable depending on local circumstance and the goals are often marked by whatever objects are handy (for example, using two coats or drink cans as goal posts), although goal nets either designed for street hockey or ice hockey could also be used. The word 'CAR!' is a common one to hear on busier streets which generally means 'stop the game.
Dedication
Although a social sport it can become an obsession with those wanting to progress to the higher and formal levels. Although road or street hockey is popular throughout Canada and parts of the United States, some residents have been raising concerns about how road hockey disturbs the neighbourhoods with the noise that the game creates and balls being accidentally flicked into and against the local residents' property. A world wide moan in-common with other ball sports popular with young people.
Potential
The first potential of playing street hockey is in the playing and enjoying the game of Hockey. the second is the potential that all players aspire too, and that is to progress into the preferred senior sport of Ice Hockey or Roller Hockey.
