Hockey is a field game played by both men and women. Played between two teams of eleven players, Players use a stick with a hook which forms the head to hit the ball along the ground. The object of the game is to get the ball into the opponents goal.
Popularity
Games played with curved sticks and a ball have been found throughout the history of the world. The modern game of hockey originated in England and is now an Olympic sport widely played across the world, particularly strong in India and Pakistan.
Location
Hockey is traditionally played on a grass field (pitch) measuring one hundred yards long by sixty wide. Goals are four yards wide by seven feet high.
Age
Hockey can be played from around the age of eight years, and is widely played in schools. Players rarely play competitively after the age of forty.
Ability
The three most necessary attributes to posses to play hockey successfully are; 1) A general fittness and the ability to run (with the ball). 2) Stick control (ball control). 3) The ability to play as part of a team.
Description
Often cruelly described as football with sticks, hockey players may not touch the ball with any part of their bodies, only propelling the ball by any part of the stick other than the rounded side (back). Teams consist of eleven players on the field, and up to five substitutes. Substitutions are not limited but may not be made during a penalty corner. There are no set positions other than goalkeeper, but most teams arrange themselves in a similar way to football teams.
Dedication
There are very few professionally retained personnel within the game of hockey. Therefor players must be prepared to maintain themselves in an appropriate state of fittness and attend regular team training sessions, whether in the team or on the bench.
Potential
There are many leagues and tournaments contested within the UK. The biggest four hockey tournaments are undoubtedly the Olympic Games, the Commonwealth Games and the Hockey World Cup, all held every 4 years. And the annual Champions Trophy Cup.

Player Costs include club fees, Which include field hire and maintenance. And the payment of competition fees and game officials expenses, and the team shirts. Individual players are responsible for supplying their own stick and kit which includes boots, shorts (or skirt). Goal keepers are permitted to ware a face guard, gauntlet gloves, pads, kickers headgear and elbow pads.
