Being a local councillor is a very interesting and necessary pastime. It is an elected post, that involves representing the local communities interests, and representing their views.
Popularity
Every local community in the country has local and district councillors, they are the fundamental foundation of a democracy, local, district and county councillors all represent local views. M.Ps and M.E.Ps the national views.
Age
Any resident who is eligible to vote is eligible to stand for election as a local councillor. There is therefor a minimum age in Britain of eighteen years of age. there is no upper age limit.
Ability
Being a local councillor the ability to take the majority view even if it is not yours personally, is important, as is listening to the lone voices concern.
Description
The duties of a local councillor are many and varied, There is a lot of committee work listening to local concerns and debating relevant issues, there is also a lot of on sight visits, looking at planning applications, making shore that highways and footpaths are in good order, and the provision and upkeep of local amenities and recreational facilities.
Dedication
This is an activity where dedication matters not to yourself. but to the people you are elected to represent, and also to your fellow councillors. Being a local councillor may only take one evening every week or so, but if you take more responsibility being on specialized committees or representing the council at higher levels it can become very time consuming three, four or even five evenings a week.
Potential
The potential to this activity are many and varied, the satisfaction of winning a campaign on behalf of your neighbours. Being invited to represent the council on a committee, chairing a committee or council, and moving on to represent a wider public.
