Microlighting is a cross between hang gliding and small aircraft flying, though traditionally open aired and looking like hang gliders with a seat and engine, microlights are now made with a closed cabin.

Popularity
Microlighting has become very popular it is far easier to train to obtain a licence than in conventional aircraft.

Location
There are many training schools and associations throughout the UK, check on line for clubs and training programmes most have on-line booking forms for trial flights.

Age
Tuition can be logged towards a licence from 14 years of age. Pilots are able to fly solo from 16 years of age and may hold their own Licence from 17 years of age. There is no upper age limit for a pilot.

Ability
You will need full instruction from a qualified tutor and obtain a NPPL licence (national private pilots licence) issued from the CAA (Civil Aviation Authorities).

Description
Feel the air rushing past and view beautiful landscapes. Microlights are available in 2 seater or 1 seat crafts, the microlight is powered by an engine with fuel consumption allowing approximately 1 hours flying, most craft use 2 stroke engines, though 2 seater crafts use a 40-80 horsepower engine. Microlights fly between 40-60mph with some of the new fixed wing craft reaching speeds of 150 mph. You can learn also to maintain and service your own craft which helps keep costs down.

Dedication
To complete your NPPL you will need 100% dedication to complete your required hours for your licence, these currently stand at The microlight licence requires at least 25 hours of flight training and to include a minimum 10 hours flown solo. The normal time to reach the standard required to pass the General Flying Test is nearer to 40 hours than 25, although a very few people do manage in the minimum time.

Potential
To own your own craft and join a club where you can make friends and enjoy the pleasure of time to relax and chill out.
