Age
Pen and ink drawing can be practised by artists of all ages and abilities.
Ability
Pen and ink lends itself to fine writing and calligraphy and may also be used as a medium for sketches, or for finished works of art.
Description
Different types of pens produce distinctive types of lines. In art, pen and ink was originally used for quick sketches, often with a high degree of abstraction. Later artists developed the pen and ink drawing into a finished art-form - particularly for illustrations in books and magazines. It can also be used for the art of calligraphy which can range from lettering to illustrating maps.
Dedication
Pen and ink drawing is one of the cheapest and easiest drawing mediums. Paper choice depends on your pen selection, many pens work well on sketchbook paper and also on watercolour paper. Pens also come with different nibs which can create differing line widths. There are many techniques to learn with pen and ink, from simple lies to hatching and crosshatching. Hatching and crosshatching are used to create tone in pen and ink drawings.
