Garden Share (Land Share) is a scheme that pairs up gardeners who have nowhere to grow their own food with garden owners or allotment holders who have the space to grow vegtables or flowers, but for whatever reason are not able to themself.
Popularity
With an increasing building density, meaning smaller gardens and a national shortage of allotments, coupled with an increased interest in growing ones own fresh food. Garden sharing schemes are springing up all over the country.
Age
There is no formal age restriction as to who can take part in a garden share. Individual circumstance and common sense being the rule. The same rule applies to ability and fittness.
Ability
Necessary ability varies; an experienced gardener who can no longer maintain his/her garden could be matched with a beginner, who has energy. Whereas a householder with no gardening knowledge, could be matched with an experienced gardener.
Description
The garden owner/allotment holder and gardener arrange between themselves what they will grow and how often the gardening will take place, and then share the produce as it is harvested.
Dedication
Before starting a garden share, certain questions should be discussed, to prevent later misunderstandings;
What will be grown?
Who gets to eat the produce?
What should the garden look like?
During what hours may you work in the garden?
May you bring friends to visit the garden?
Where will gardening tools and supplies be stored?
Who pays for any water used?
Will the garden be organic or can chemicals be used?
Will the arrangement be indefinite, or for a defined period?
Potential
A successful garden share leads to a tidy well kept garden, the sharing of experience, the forming of new friendships and the producing of fresh produce for the table of both parties.
